FAQS

GENERAL

Where can I see your gear?

For now, only online – over time we hope to sell through retailers who want to stock us but to keep costs down we sell directly online - our proprietary brands Bajau and Narwal are distributed both directly and via channel partners around the world.

Where is H20 Life headquartered/operate?

We distribute from a fulfilment warehouse in NC. Design, marketing and operations occurs in Australia. Customer service is via Australia and Greece. Manufacturing takes places globally.

Are you selling/can I buy shafts, masks, fins etc?

Not yet – we only sell what you see on the website – over time we will build the range to offer everything you need hence if its not on the website we don’t carry it at this stage.

Can you modify/custom build a product for me?

At this stage no. We distribute through a dedicated pick and pack/fulfillment facility and don’t have the capacity to customize products for customers. If you need any advice please ask us or visit our How To section.

Shipping outside the USA?

H20 Life only directly distributes product inside the continental USA. This is why there is no option to ship outside of the USA at this stage. Pelaj can only be sold inside the USA due to territory agreements.

We can ship to APO’s and some US protectorates such as Guam, Puerto Rico etc but these are often cost prohibitive from our standard couriers and we need to find a cost effective solution before shipping. Get in touch if you need more details.

If outside of the US you may wish to get items using a freight forwarder such as myus.com, shipitto.com, bongous.com etc.

Free shipping?

Free shipping applies when you buy goods over $199 within the continental USA.

On occasion we will offer a free shipping promotion but be quick when you see it.

Free shipping isn’t showing?

Free shipping is available when you spend $199 or more or when we run a promotion and issue vouchers. Bear in mind a lot of products we sell are much longer than normal parcels and quite expensive to ship – hence we charge a flat shipping fee and more often than not don’t pass on the full cost of shipping to make it cost effective for you.

PELAJ

Is the Pelaj front bungee internally supported on the gun?

The gun bungee is anchored to a super strong eye that also doubles as a reel line guide.

The entire muzzle is one molded piece made from PA66 - fibre glass reinforced nylon. It is extremely strong and you can use it with confidence - the screws holding the muzzle to the barrel will fail before the anchor does.

Guns

What is the difference between the Pelaj gun models?

H20 LIfe carries the 4 most popular Pelaj gun models - each one is specced for a specific application and spearfishing environment.

Generally speaking the smaller the gun the smaller the target species and vice versa - you can use bigger guns for smaller fish but they can be unwieldy and by the time you get the gun in place the fish is long gone. Similarly smaller guns can be used on bigger fish but you may not have the range and/or kinetic energy to make a holding shot.

Pelaj gun 101

Venom - excellent all round gun. Fast light highly maneuverable gun, fast flat shooting gun - use for fish >10lb .Number one selling gun by volume.

Specs

Sabre - heavier spear and powerband and Wobby cam camo barrel - a 1.1/1.2 gun is an excellent gun that will cover 80% of spearfishing applications. Use for for fish up to 30lb with confidence.

Specs

Nemesis - ideal all purpose gun, heavier spear, double rubber and bluewater super rigid bluewater camo barrel. Use it in almost every application. If you only wanted one gun this should be the one.

Shoot it all day using one rubber and power up to 2 when you need the extra power. Use to >1.2m for all day fishing and 1.2m+ for a bluewater gun.

Specs

Kanji - the mack daddy of spearguns - the 50 cal of spearguns with enough power for any target fish species. Named after the Irukandji jellyfish native to Northern Australia from which one sting can kill a grown man.

Features the heaviest euro spear on the market powered by 3 x 14mm bands and delivers a mega payload to kill every target species no matter how big.

Probably too big and unwieldy to be used as anything other than a bluewater/big fish gun but if you like overkill then this is the gun for you!

Specs

Which gun/s should I buy?

Generally speaking buy the gun for the application you will use it most for – for example if you are shooting freshwater/pan fish then a smaller gun >1m will cover 95% of your applications.

On the other hand if you are shooting 50lb+ wahoo or yellowfin at long range or in clear water then you need the longest most powerful gun you can comfortably handle and we would suggest 1.2 m+ multi rubber guns.

Remember shot placement is everything and use fishes innate curiosity to get closer.

Consider the following matrix when choosing a gun

ApplicationGun TypeSuggested Models
Freshwater - up to 10lb >1.1m - this gives you a fast maneuverable gun Venom/Sabre >1.1
Pan fish to pelagics >1.2m - small enough to be versatile big enough when something big swims by. Sabre/Nemesis >1.2m
Pelagics/bluewater 1.2m+ shooting pelagics often requires long range shots with heavy spears to penetrate. Nemesis/Kanji 1.2m+ for a dedicated bluewater

That said one of the unique features of Pelaj guns is their ability to be powered up or down to suit changing condition by removing/adding rubbers as required.

What’s the best all round gun?

If you wanted a gun that could be used in the widest application consider a 1.1-1.2 Nemesis – it’s a gun powerful enough to land almost any fish that swims and yet small enough to be able to maneuver in shallow/murky water – you can also take off one of the bands and use a lighter spear or clip on an extra band and heavier spear on to hunt bigger species.

What about the mechanisms? I’ve heard reports of misfiring, jamming etc?

There were some initial issues with the first two production runs of Pelaj guns in 2007.

Internal tolerances on the mechanism were too tight and when they absorbed water they swelled slightly they jammed the mechanism.

On occasion the swelling internal parts prevented the sear (the part that holds the spear in the mechanism) from fully engaging and the guns would misfire.

There have since been several tooling changes to address the issue and we are not aware of any systemic issues since the tooling changes were made.

If you ever have a problem with any Pelaj product remember we provide a KISS warranty with every product we sell.

What is a euro/pipe/rail gun?

Euro guns

Euro guns are spearguns which evolved in Europe.

The barrel is usually made from aluminium or composite (sometimes wood) and comprise a rear trigger mechanism and light(ish) spear made from mild stainless - typically 6-7mm - they are very effective at targeting smaller fish >10lb.

They are very light and consequently very easy to maneuver especially when diving 30m+ which some European applications call for.

Railguns

Rail guns - beefed up euro style guns which have an integrated rail as part of the barrel. Typically built to a stronger, higher spec (heavier spring steel spears to 8mm, multiple rubbers) on account of the larger target species. Very popular outside of Europe and increasingly used to target very large fish.

The integrated rail gives railguns stiffer/more rigid barrels resulting in better energy transfer from the powerbands to the spear resulting in a faster more accurate shot.

Pipe guns

American term given to euro and rail guns on account of the “pipe” barrel, pipe guns can be both euro and rail guns.

Whats the difference between euro vs American guns?

Euro - pipe gun - components made of reinforced nylon, barrel made from alloy or composite usually lighter and consequently easy to track.

American - traditionally made from wood, heavy spears often with multiple rubbers. Often requires significant effort to load and track. Ideal for big game applications with a small number of shots targetting heavy deep bodied fish.

Which one (euro vs rail vs Aussie/American) is better?

Whichever one works for you! Our personal preference is for railguns on account of their ease of use and maneuverability and price.

Will Bajau make a speargun?

Yes - we are working on it - keep an eye on the Bajau site for details.

When will Bajau make a speargun?

Soon!

How do I look after my guns/gear?

Between dives wash your with fresh water.

Ensure you blast your gun mechanism with fresh water to get rid of any sand in the mechanism.

Shake out any water and dry your gear in the shade.

Spray gun rubbers with silicon spray to increase their lifespan and coat your spears (especially around all wear points ) with a food (animal or plant) based oil or fat. Don’t put any oil based products on your rubbers.

Store in a cool dry location away from direct sun as heat and sunlight will accelerate rubber/silicon perishing.

Can I get Bajau cheaper directly from you?

No – our goal is to provide Bajau at the best possible value and wherever possible at the lowest possible cost to you.

This is done by removing the various cost layers and margins that a normal supply chain entails.

Core to this is the supply of products directly to retailers and end customers wherever possible at parity pricing around the world – hence if you buy from a Bajau retail partner it should cost the same (give or take) as if you bought it directly from us.

There will always be slight discrepancies that reflect freight, duties etc.
